November 2025 - Where has this year gone?

Across the UK November is dedicated to raising awareness about men’s mental health (Movember), lung cancer, diabetes, mouth cancer, and pancreatic cancer.

Lung cancer is one of the most common and serious types of cancer in the UK, but early detection can make a big difference. More than 43,000 people are diagnosed with the condition every year in the UK.

Diabetes is a serious condition where your blood glucose level is too high. It can happen when your body doesn’t produce enough of the hormone insulin or the insulin it produces isn’t effective (type 2). Or, when your body can’t produce any insulin at all (type 1). Type 1 diabetes affects 8% of people living with diabetes and type 2 diabetes affects 90% of people living with diabetes. There are also lots of other types of diabetes.

Mouth cancer, also called oral cancer, can affect any part of the mouth, including the gums, tongue, inside the cheeks, or lips. Anyone can get mouth cancer, but the risk increases with age. Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 66 and 70. More recently Mouth cancer has been linked to having changes in your genes and having some types of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in your mouth.

Pancreatic cancer often doesn’t cause symptoms in the early stages. As the cancer grows, it may start to cause symptoms. The symptoms may not be specific to pancreatic cancer and they may come and go to begin with. This can make pancreatic cancer hard to diagnose. Pancreatic cancer can run in the family if there is an underlying genetic risk factor. Click here to learn more about minimising your genetic risk.
