April 2026 – The new book Irritated: The Allergy Epidemic and What We Can Do About It was released yesterday. This highly anticipated book explores how factors like air pollution, poverty, and modern lifestyles can influence the development of allergies, and why some people are more likely to go undiagnosed and untreated.
The book also tackles common questions and misconceptions: Are we really “too clean”? Is there any link between vaccines and allergies? What role does antibiotic overuse play? Drawing on insights from immunology, genetics, diet, ad industrialisation, it explains what we know, and what we don’t, about this growing health issue.
Importantly, Irritated highlights which allergy tests are reliable (such as the ALEX test run here in our Forensic Genomics Innovation Hub laboratory), which to avoid (even if hugely popular online), and looks ahead to new and innovative treatments currently being researched. The Author, Rebecca Seal, a well-respected Food and Health Journalist, called on over 60 experts, including our own Chief Scientific Officer, Dr Caroline Parker, to help her understand allergies and write this hugely important and timely exploration of a condition that affects millions.
